Fortunate Isles.

Fortunate Isles, also known as Isles of the Blessed (Νήσοι των Μακάρων) (Μακάρων Νῆσοι) (makarōn nēsoi) were mythical islands in Greek legends.

Elysium, or the Elysial Fields (Ἠλύσιον πεδίον) (Ēlýsion pedíon), was the name of paradise in Ancient Greece. According to myths, gods and goddesses lived there.

Fortunate Isles are closely associated with utopia and the Golden Age.

Atlantis.

Atlantis (Ἀτλαντὶς νῆσος) (Atlantìs nêsos) means 'island of Atlas'. This place was called after the Titan (Τιτᾶνες) (Titán) Atlas (Ἄτλας) (Átlās).

Atlantis was a fictional island country. There are many different myths and legends about this island.

Scientists in different periods of history wrote about Atlantis. The ancient Greek philosopher Plato (Πλάτων) (Plátōn) was one of them.

Calypso.

Calypso (Καλυψώ) was a nymph in Greek myths and legends. She was a weaver. Her name means “she who conceals”. Calypso lived on the island of Ogygia. Odysseus spent seven years with her on this island.

Calypso’s parents were: Atlas, Nereus, or Oceanus and Tethus, Pleione, or Doris. Also, she had several siblings. 

When Odysseus lived on the island Ogygia Calypso was in love with him. But Odysseus was homesick and she let him go.

Then Hermes came to Calypso.

She had children: Latinus,  Nausithous, Nausinous, and Telegonus.

Calypso killed herself because she loved Odysseus.

Literature. Part forty four.

                                      Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson.

This book was written in XIX century. There were very different characters in it. Jim Hawkins was the main character. Long John Silver, Dr. David Livesey, Captain Alexander Smollet were main characters, too.

Friends had voyage in the sea. On the way they met pirates. Other adventures happened with them on the island.

At the end characters returned home with treasures. They used them.

Famous adventure novel was translated to many languages. There are many movies and cartoons created about this story. Artists draw pictures of it.

Literature. Part forty.

                                           Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe.

This famous novel was published on April 25, 1719, in the United Kingdom. Author said that his book was an allegory.

Young Robinson Crusoe wanted to travel to the sea. He met a lot of adventures on his way. After shipwreck Robinson appeared on the deserted island. He lived there for twenty eight years.

Character did different things for his life. Also, Robinson Crusoe met a tribe of cannibals. He saved one man from them and called him "Friday". They became friends

At the end Robinson was saved and returned home.

There are many illustrations and movies about this story. Novel was translated different languages.

Birth of Aphrodite.

Aphrodite is a Greek goddess of love and beauty. Her parents were Zeus and Dione.

The goddess was born fron the sea foam, in Phaphos, Cyprus. Horae met her on the shore of the island and adorned Aphrodite with beautiful jewels. The gods wanted to marry her.

Also, Aphrodite had personal symbols. For example, Rose, Apple, Dolphin, Viola, and Lily. There are many legends about this goddess in Greek mythology. Sculptors and artists used Aphrodite in their works.

Colossus of Rhodes.

The statue of the Ancient Greek god of the sun Helias, was on the Greek island of Rhodes. This island was situated in the Aegean Sea.

Sculptor Chares of Lindos started building this work in 292 B.C. for a period of twelve years. Statue was made from iron, clay, and bronze. Its height was about 36 metres (100 feet). Colossus of Rhodes appeared in 20 B.C.

But fifty four years later, in 226 B.C., earthquake occured on the island. So, sixth Wonder of the Ancient World was damaged.

Literature. Part fourteen.

                  The Swiss Family Robinson by Johann David Wyss.

A family. Father-William, mother-Elizabeth, son Fritz-15, son Ernest-13, son Jack-11, and son Franz-8. Family of Robinsons were in a storm and their ship was wrecked. They were on an island in an ocean.

Family survived on the island. Elder boys and father studied this place at the beginning. They found food and built some shelters for themselves. Book takes place during two years.

There are movies about this story.

Cyprus Island.

I like the Mediterranean Sea in September or October. So last two years my family and me had summer holiday on Cyprus, in Paphos city. It is Greek part of Cyprus island. Moon landscape, blue sky, hot weather, people with smiles, warm Mediterranean Sea...

Also on this nice island many people are talking on Russian language, even some natives. Paphos city has Russian shops where there are buckwheat, magazines, and other Russians goods. In villiages there are houses with commom swimming pools. On the tree growing different fruit granatium, oranges, and etc. Its very tasty!

On Cyprus as well there are many British people. Because in Great Britain often grey sky and rains. English shops also popular on Cyprus island, English magazines are interesting. So Russian and English speech are often heard in Greek part of Cyprus.

Native people talking on Greek language to each other, but international English they know too.

Country has two airports in Paphos and Larnaca. In Larnaca airport more bigger than Paphos. Island doesn't have railroads, just buses and cars.

Malta.

Malta is an island in the Mediterranean Sea. It stays between Italy and North Africa. Malta is the first country where I was abroad. After the end of my elementary school we travelled to Malta to study English language.

The Mediterranean Sea is the first sea which I saw. I was just ten years old. I have very good memoried about it!

Spring and summer on island are warm. People can swim in the sea or in pool. At the beginning fall there was also hot weather. Blue sky and bright sun can make your mood better.

On Malta I began learning English and understand mathematics. But in that time I learned in Russian school. I found new friends and good teachers. It was very good practice for me. Just we missed our usual things such as food and weather.

My first fly by plane was on Malta. We lived there for eight months. It was really nice!
