Allegory.

Allegory (ἀλληγορία) (allegoria) is a type of artistic literary form. This word means "veiled language, figurative" from Greek language.

It shows a specific situation in a figurative sense. An allegory is like a metaphor.

This genre is popular in various art forms, such as: poetry, prose, painting, and etc.

Allegory was at different times and in different countries.

Many authors use this artistic genre for their works.

Literature. Part seventy three.

                                             Ivanhoe: A Romance by Walter Scott.

This historical novel was written in XIX century. The author described lives of people in the Middle Ages in detail. It helps to understand history of England and other European countries.

The book tells the real historical events of that time. Knights and kings have many different adventures. Also, there are jester, lady, prince, and etc.

Characters have relationships with each other. They visited neighboring countries. Religion is described in novel, too.

This book was released in 1819. Ivanhoe: A Romance sparked interest with Medieval time. It influenced to romanticism and Gothic Revival architecture.

There are many illustrations to this novel. The book was translated to other languages.

Great people: Homer.

 Homer (Ὅμηρος) was an author in ancient Greece. He was born in VIII century B. C. in Ionia.

Homer wrote about the Trojan War. He was the author of the Odyssey and the Iliad. Homer influenced ancient Greek literature and culture. He wrote about the warrior Achilles and the King Agamemnon.

Also, Homer was interested in philosophy.

His poems were translated many different languages.

Homer died in VIII century B. C. in Ionia.

Literature. Part forty.

                                           Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe.

This famous novel was published on April 25, 1719, in the United Kingdom. Author said that his book was an allegory.

Young Robinson Crusoe wanted to travel to the sea. He met a lot of adventures on his way. After shipwreck Robinson appeared on the deserted island. He lived there for twenty eight years.

Character did different things for his life. Also, Robinson Crusoe met a tribe of cannibals. He saved one man from them and called him "Friday". They became friends

At the end Robinson was saved and returned home.

There are many illustrations and movies about this story. Novel was translated different languages.

Literature. Part thirty six.

                                   Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift.

This book was written in XVIII century and has four parts. Author described different problems for that time with humor and satire.

Lemuel Gulliver appeared in Lilliput country. People were very little for Gulliver. He looked like a giant. But liliputians had their own laws. Also, little citizens had a conflict with another country named Blefuscu.

War between this countries has begun because Liliput wanted to break egg by the small end while Blefuscu wanted to do it by the big. Gulliver understood that it was a stupid reason for the conflict. Many adventures happened with character in this place.

Brobdingnag was populated by a big people. Lemuel Gulliver was looked little to them. They used Gulliver as a toy. He lived with a queen of Brobdingnag. Also, he fought with big insects and animals. Gulliver understood many different things.

There are many movies and printings about this story. Novel was translated on many languages.

Fairy tale.

Fairy tale is one of the types of literature. There are folk tales, who were made by the people. In ancient times, when there was no technology, people told each other stories. So, these fairy tales were saved for us in books.

Also, there are fairy tales written by authors. Folk tales and tales written by authors have similar things. In these type of literature animals can behave like people. Or people and animals talk to each other. The magic often happens in fairy tales. Princes and princesses, kings and queens, fairy godmothers, those are the main characters of many fairy tales.

Often good triumphs over evil. Fairy tales are instructive. In modern books, there are fairy tales with beautiful illustrations. Tales are make into films and cartoons. Popular heroes of fairy tales sometimes become heroes of jokes.

Popular authors of fairy tales: Charles Perrault, the Brothers Grimm, Alan Alexander Milne, J.M. Barrie. Their works are very famous in all world. Little children know their characters since early age.

P.S. This is fairy tale. One type of literature. Next time will be another part.

Why we must read books?

Books and literature are very important for us. During all of our history people write and read something. But, especially books were princioal for human.

Literature has different types: poems, short stories, novels, fairy tales, and etc. All of them have real meaning in our life.

Example, fairy tales can be folk or written by author.

Novels describe life of characters during several years.

Short story has just several pages by may include funny moments.

Poems are written with rhyme.

Books can be in electronic and paper. Both of them good and important for us.

Read any literature!
