Cubism.

Cubism is an art movement. It appeared at the beginning of the XX century.

Cubism is found in painting, literature, architecture, and sculpture.

Pablo Picasso painted some of his paints in this style.

Modernism, surrealism, avant-garde have something in common with Cubism.

Great people: Giorgione.

Giorgio Barbarelli da Castelfranco was born in 1477, in Italy. He was a painter. Giorgione studied with Giovanni Bellini. He painted in High Renaissance style.

His notable works are: The Tempest (1508), Sleeping Venus (1510), Madonna and Child Between St. Francis and St. Nicasius, or  Castelfranco Madonna (1503/04), The Three Philosophers (1505-1509).

Giorgione died in 1510, in Italy.

Fashion changes with time, only the classic remains.

There are many examples of classics in art. Some paintings and books are studied at different times.

Allegory.

Allegory (ἀλληγορία) (allegoria) is a type of artistic literary form. This word means "veiled language, figurative" from Greek language.

It shows a specific situation in a figurative sense. An allegory is like a metaphor.

This genre is popular in various art forms, such as: poetry, prose, painting, and etc.

Allegory was at different times and in different countries.

Many authors use this artistic genre for their works.

Great people: Rembrandt.

 Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was a Dutch artist. Also, he was interested in printmaking and drawing. He was born on July 15, 1606, in Leiden, Netherlands.

The artist influenced Baroque and Dutch Golden Age. His works were very important for these periods. 

Rembrandt created created many famous paintings. The Abduction of Europa (1632), The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp (1632), Danaë (1636-1650), self-partraits, The Night Watch (1642), Bathsheba at Her Bath (1654), Hundred Guilder Print (1647-1649).

Rembrandt was married on Saskia van Uylenburgh since 1634 to 1642. They had children. 

The painter died on October 4, 1669, in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Naive art.

This type art is a part of primitivism. Naive art includes a lot of crafts, such as: architecture, sculptures, painting.

Primitivism appeared in XVIII century. There are graphics, applied arts, amateur performances in it.

Also, many works in naive art were created by self-taught artists.

In France this type of art appeared at the beginning of XX century. The Repast of the Lion (1907) by Henri Rousseau, is a painting of naive art.

This art exists in many countries.

Postmodernism.

Postmodernism is the last type of art. It was started in XX century. Postmodernism was manifested in things like: philosophy, music, literature, architecture, paintings. This type of art has many bright colors.

Prior art forms are often found in postmodernism. For example, furniture has mix types such as avant-garde, baroque, gothic. It looks very interesting!

Literature of that period was a wide variety of generes. Irony and humor were popular in books. Postmodern and modern literature have many similar things. For example, One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez was one of these books.

Postmodern philosophy is one of important parts of art. In XX century logic and realism were popular. People were very interested in science. So, their views were coincided with it. Representatives of that time: Michel Foucault, Jean-Francois Lyotard, Jean Baudrillard.

Postmodernism still continuous in XXI century. May be soon a new type of art will appear.

P.S. Types of art are finished now. But don't be upset. There are other interesting things. I will talk about them next time.

Avant-garde.

Avant-garde is a type of european arts that appeared in XIX and XX centuries. It has many similar things with surrealism and modernism. Avant-garde includes many types of art. Such as: music, literature, cinema, painting, theatre.

Pictures of this time were bright and strange, works had a lot of mysteries. In avant-garde literature, dramas and poems were popular. Representatives of the time: The Picture of Dprian Gray by Oscar Wilde, Pale Fire by Vladimir Nabokov, Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett.

Movies were black-and-white because cinema just appeared at the beginning of XX century. For example, Sur un air de Charleston by Jean Renoir.

Many kinds of art created classical things which are studied in schools by students. One art form depends on another. So, avant-garde is important for others.

P.S. This is one of the latest types of art. But not the last.

Surrealism.

Surrealism appeared in Europe in the beginning of 1920s. This epoch of art has a lot of strange works.

In XX century, when there were many technological discoveries, art changed too. Artists drew fantastic pictures with strange creatures. For example, The Elephant Celebes by Max Ernst.

Despite the fact that pictures were unusual at the time, they were very nice. Pepresentatives of surrealism were: Pablo Picasso, Rene Magritte, Salvador Dali, Marcel Duchamp, Joan Miro.

Technical progress has given people new views at old things. Pictures became brighter. Many of them are considered classics. In the beginning of XX century, cinema appeared. Surrealism is one many parts of art where films were included.

P.S. Surrealism is a modern type of art and its history continues now. Soon, there will be next.

Modernism.

Modernism is a part of arts which was around from XIX until XX centuries. It manifested in many forms of arts, such arts literature, painting, architecture.

Modernism is different from other arts. This type of art has featured of several species of arts, photography appeared.

But then paintings were also popular. Representatives of the time were: Edouard Manet, Pablo Picasso, Vincent van Gogh. Many paintings have become classics. For example, The Scream by Edvard Munch.

Modernist literature wrote about wars and history. Writers: Ernest Hemingway, Virginia Woolf, James Joyce, Andrei Bely. Many of them are now studied in schools and colleges.

Architecture began to build high-rise buildings in big cities. For example, The Robie House, in Chicago, Illinois.

P.S. Modernism is an art which history didn't end, but is still in progress.

Romanticism.

Romanticism was popular in the world from XVIII until XIX centuries. This type of art extend in such things as painting, literature, and music.

Also Romanticism appeared in Industtrial Revolution, when there were trains,factory machines, photography, and human values.

Painting during this period had something in common with Gothic. Example, Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog by Caspar David Friedrich.

In Romantic literature poetry was popular. Pepresentatives: Alexander Pushkin, Adam Mickiewicz, Gord Byron. Now many works of this writers are studied in schools by students.

Music in that period emphasized the inner world. Many classic music was written during that time. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Joseph Haydn, Frederic Chopin.

Romanticism has mixed parts of previous arts, including Classicism, Gothic, and Renaissance. This suggests that humanity remembers its own past.

Rococo.

Rococo art style was popular in Europe, from XVII until XVIII centuries. This type has similarities with Baroque. Both art style featured luxury.

Rococo manifested in many areas at the time. Philosophy, music, architecture, painting, theatre, design.

In central and western Europe rich people had big and luxurious furniture. Large mirrors with large cutouts. The backs of chairs and table legs were of gold or other precious material.

In Rococo paintings were painted with less bright colors than Baroque. Example, Marie Antoinette a la Rose by Elisabeth Vigee-Lebrun, 1783.

Architecture was known for luxury. Buildings were built in the style of a lot of wealth. Also sculpture had many beautiful features, even if there was little.

In fashion were big and wide dresses with radiant colors popular. Wigs were still in fashion.

P.S. It ended another era of beauty and wealth. Then will be a new era.

Baroque.

Baroque style was important for European people from XVII until XVIII centuries. This type of art manifested itself in a variety of things. Painting, architecture, philosophy, music, sculpture, theatre.

Pictures of this era were bright. Example, Still-life by Josefa de Obidos. In Baroque architecture, popular was luxury. Baroque and Classicism have similar features.

Example, the Church of Saint Susanna at the Baths of Diocletain.

Baroque style was big on large premises. Furnitures were big, too. Mirrors with frames, chairs with luxurious backs, huge beds.

In music were popular composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Antonio Vivaldi, Claudio Monteverdi.

Fashion of Baroque looked rich. Big dresses and wigs were very popular. Rich women used make up.

P.S. Baroque created a path for modern art.

Classicism.

Classicism was popular in western Europe from XVII until XIX centuries. It appeared in different types of arts. Painting, theatre, architecture, and sculpture.

The first classic arts appeared in Ancient Greece and Rome. After human history has seen many problems, in XVII century people returned to old art.

Example of classicism painting, Moliere by Nicolas Mignard.

The first classical architecture can be found in the territory of Ancient Greece and Rome. Example, Maison Carree in France.

During two hundred years people returned to their past. They studied the work of their ancestors. Artists created a new art form.

So appeared the new art works. Pictures and sculptures were similar to the ancient.

Classicism has split in several parts of art. But more about that some other time.

Gothic art.

Gothic art was an important period in Medieval history. It was developed in central and western Europe. Gothic art was a dark type of art which appeared in painting, architecture, and sculpture.

This type of art was popular from XII until XVI centuries. For Medieval people God and religion were very important. So, on Gothic pictures and sculptures Christian were shawn saints. Example, Notre-Dame de Paris in Paris, France. One of the most famous architecture work of Gothic art.

In that time people built simple furniture in Gothic style. Painting in Medieval period performed on differnt things: stained glass, frescoes, and panel painting.

Gothic art was popular just during Middle Ages. On Renaissance another types of art appeared because people have changed values.

But the era of Gothic art was important for Medieval people.
